Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Fallen Trees?

June 29, 2026

A tree crashing down in a storm is dramatic, and the insurance rules around it are stranger than most people expect. Whether you are covered depends on two things: what the tree hit, and why it fell.

If it hits a structure, you are usually covered

If a tree falls and damages your house, garage, fence, or another covered structure, your homeowners policy typically pays to repair the damage, minus your deductible. This holds whether it was your tree or a neighbor's. The policy follows the **damage to your property**, not who owned the tree.

If it hits nothing, you usually are not

The opposite case is what trips people up. If a tree falls in your yard and hits **nothing**, just lands on the grass, most policies will not pay to remove it. Tree removal is generally covered only when the tree damages an insured structure, and even then there is often a **cap**, frequently around $500 to $1,000 per tree.

Why it fell can matter

If a healthy tree comes down in a storm, that is usually a covered peril. If the tree was clearly **dead or rotting** and you ignored it, an insurer may argue the fall came from neglect and deny the claim. Keeping your own trees in safe shape is considered your responsibility.

Know your tree coverage before the storm

The limits and the removal cap are sitting in your policy right now. MyPolicyShield will read your homeowners policy and tell you exactly when fallen trees are covered, what the removal cap is, and how your deductible applies.

Worth knowing this before the wind picks up.
